How would you refute someone who trivialises Kaneki’s development during the Aogiri arc (i.e. his transition from Kuroneki to Shironeki) as Kaneki goes from a ‘wimp to a badass’?

harostar:

Oh man, that classic argument.

First and foremost, Kaneki prior to his torture wasn’t a wimp. He might have viewed himself as weak, but then again Kaneki is probably his own worst critic.

Kaneki had only been a Ghoul for about two months when Aogiri took him. e started out as an absolutely ordinary college student, a normal kid that had never so much as tried to punch anyone. He was also a victim of abuse, having learned and internalized all kinds of unhealthy ideas about himself.

His hesitance to fight and give into violence makes even MORE SENSE now that we know his mother was physically abusive to him. Many victims of childhood abuse are fearful of becoming just like their abusers. This is another way in which the Black Goat’s Egg reflects Kaneki’s life – he lived in fear of becoming violent and abusive just like his mother. So he was even more hesitant to use violence, and feared both his power and how good giving into his instincts felt.

But even so, Kaneki was still pretty strong even before his torture. He learned to break arms through reading a book, broke Amon’s Quinque and beat him to a stand-still, and got in some decent hits against Tsukiyama. (Tsukiyama is compared to a World-class Boxer by another Ghoul, to explain his level of strength.)

During the escape attempt, Kaneki faces the S-Rated Bin Brothers alone. He manages to beat one of them in a one-on-one fight, through RIPPING A LAMP POST out of the ground and using it to beat the guy upside the head. Kaneki was strong even then, simply not on the same level as Yamori. That doesn’t make him a wimp, it just means that he hadn’t managed to hit the Big Times until the torture gave him a boost.

As we’ve learned in :Re, injury actually makes Ghouls stronger because it causes the RC pathways to spread through the body. So Kaneki’s torture gave him a huge boost, and then he further boosted it through eating Yamori’s flesh. In terms of his mental state, he reaches a point where he embraces the very things he feared before. While on the surface, it SEEMS like a positive change……the narrative proves to us that it ultimately wasn’t a good thing.

Kaneki went overboard, throwing away his support and trying to become as much of a monster as his enemies. He was an emotional wreck, sacrificing his sanity and his morals in a reckless pursuit of strength. And it ended up destroying him, while he was unable to save anyone that he cared about.

Neither state was necessarily a good thing. Kaneki simply traded one unhealthy attitude and coping mechanism for another. He went from living in fear of becoming a monster, to basically trying to force himself to be one as much as possible. And he ultimately realized it was entirely out of selfishness and fear, rather than to protect the people he loved.

Now, we’re seeing him repeating that pattern. He’s gone from being afraid, to kind of accepting things, to embracing cruelty and throwing away his humanity. These aren’t good things, and it certainly isn’t going from “wimp to badass”. It’s just going from one kind of damaged state to another.

I’m having mutsuki feels right now. I think he’s going to die D: he was thinking about sasaki the same way as shirazu in his last moments.-don’t you dare ishida- stop killing them they are children.

bubi-the-eumel-deactivated20170:

There is a possbility and I can understand that. I mean, I fear as much for him as you do. I mean Mutsuki’s chances to come even out unscrached are zero. Hachikawa is dead…

image

Ayumu is unconsciouss..(and possibly dead because she was thrown into the sea)

image

And what no one seems to have considered is..

image

The boat is gone…

image

I mean even here they seemed to have walked/swimed to that cave as there is no boat whatsoever.

image

I am not saying that Aogiri doesn’t have boats, but I am pretty sure that if they have it, they’re probably next to their hideout. It seems Scarecrow has taken the boat because the location looks a bit similar where Hachikawa and co arrived. So Mutsuki can’t get away even if he wanted to (it is just my speculation though).

And about Torso…

image

Well, Mutsuki has to make a Kill Bill move to get out of that situation… He doesn’t seem tho have any weapons on his hands and seems to have spend all his weapons when they fought against Seidou X Rio, Besties Foreva. But here might be two possibilites though.

  • Tooru finally activates his “ghoul powers” which enables him more strengh and therefore a possibility in defeating Torso. Problems are that he still has to find a boat to get out of this godforsaken Alcatraz-esque island. Also, Seidorae are aware that the doves are already there, so they might later catch up to him.
  • Tooru “loses” against Torso and let’s hope some Aogiri members other than those two BFFs might find them, so they can prevent Torso from doing… further damage… But I am pretty sure they are taking Tooru to their hideout. They will probably torture him as I can’t imagine Tooru would spit out information that easily. Many already paralleled Tooru’s demise to Kaneki’s torture and quite frankly I think that is going to happen as well…

BUT I am positive that Eto already knows about Tooru and she will use her knowledge of his status to manipulate Kaneki just like with Hinami. So for now we can definitely say Tooru will stay alive. For now.

Thanks for asking. ^^

I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned this on here (X), but the chapter 63 title, “葬生樹“ (Tree of Burial), can be pronounced as souseiki, which has the same pronunciation as the Book of Genesis (創世記).

So not only is Eto giving herself up as a “sacrifice” to destroy the “twisted birdcage”, she is helping to create a new world, where ghouls can exist freely.

haha i just had a horrible thought, though.

Eto is up there with Kaneki and no one else. He’s totally in that camera shot as the CCG representative, (though he’s not wearing a badge as far as I can tell.) She presumably promised to do this all peacefully, but she’s clearly already broken script.

If she really wants to get crazy with this, she could activate her single kakugan and thus broadcast to all the ghouls out there that hey – look – I’m a one eyed ghoul!

and if she takes out her kagune, Kaneki will have to contain her. And he doesn’t have a quinque with him as far as we’ve seen. Which means he also has to activate his single kakugan. Artificial or no, that also reveals him as a one eyed ghoul.

And if he’s there as the official CCG rep, it reveals a one eyed ghoul in the CCG.

Not to mention both of them have matching eldritch horror kagune, now.

I don’t know if this will happen. But if it does…

Well, that’s one way to broadcast your choice of One Eyed King to the public, Eto.

I think that once she gets out her kagune, the cameras would be off immediately. Despite all the publicity the TV could get out of it, they don’t want people to see a potential live broadcast massacre. + If Kaneki is there as CCG representative, it may mean that there are people from CCG overlooking the whole broadcast from behind the scenes. Tey would pressure staff to stop the broadcast immediately.

If the CCG were overseeing the broadcast, which, honestly, WHY AREN’T THEY, they should have cut the cameras as soon as she went off script, and claimed technical difficulties.

Clearly, they don’t have the kill switch. Kaneki’s face is proof of that. That is not the look of someone confident someone will prevent this from getting any worse.

Seriously, why doesn’t the CCG have a kill switch on this broadcast. They messed up SO BADLY.

And even if the cameras do shut off shortly afterward, it’ll be enough for everyone to see the two single kakugan come on, which is honestly all that Eto needs the ghouls watching to see.

If the news crews in Japan are anything like the news crews in America (and I know we have some really, uniquely terrible news channels over here) then if they smell blood, literally or metaphorically, they won’t turn the camera off at all. There’s an old news adage “if it bleeds, it leads” for a reason. Every station is going to want to be the station to cover the eldritch tentacle fight with the best angles.

You know, unless there are actually laws on the books that allow the CCG to pull a media black out? Which will be terribly hard to do, consider they chose to do it live.

Your “if it bleeds, it leads” thing is making me imagine Tokyo Ghoul as LA Ghoul and I am just considering what would happen if this press conference happened here now and it’s just

I wonder why they made the broadcast live. Wouldn’t it be better for everyone’s control and safety if it was pre-recorded?

Few choices about this make sense, tbh.

With just one book, Eto has the ability to change the world

hideyoshi-senpai:

With that live announcement like that, this battle, she already won. With a book like that, about ghouls. If she were to write a book like that, about life of a ghoul (or perhaps about her own life) people will definitely read it. People will start to have a different opinion about ghoul, different perspective about them, perhaps even pushing the reform they have about how ghouls being treated. This is big, this book could perhaps change everything. It would perhaps cause a great stir in the world.

Ghouls are treated the way they are because the public has no connection, nor know anything about them. It’s obvious that if you will be afraid of something that is unknown to you, but here is a book that will change everything about that.

but seriously, whose side is furuta even on??

He’s part of V, yet he called Aogiri so they could take Shirazu’s body to experiment of for Kanou’s half-ghoul experiments. And he’s also in the CCG, yet he didn’t hesitate to assist in killing a CCG investigator..

And it is highly likely that he’s Souta, a Clown.. Wtf Furuta who even ARE you?

I feel that he is a V member, or a Clown. After all, V’s role is to keep the status quo, and he could’ve done those things to do just that, while the clowns cause chaos.

Aogiri and the CCG have no such stance – they’re a mix of the clown’s and V’s theories along with extremism towards the opposite species.

Well yeah, but handing over Shirazu would make the balance even more uneven. That’s exactly the opposite of V’s wishes.

About that, I’m not so sure – I think his actions of handing over Shirazu were possibly part of a deal.

After the raid, the CCG and Aogiri, the two unbalancing forces became more involved, with the CCG starting to target the CCG directly, which would help V.

But why would Aogiri not just kill Furuta, if he was part of the CCG? He probably made a deal with them thru Aogiri…

This is all mainly speculation, though.

It’s being pretty heavily implied this coming arc will contain revelations and changes for Urie’s character.

  •    The last arc ended with major character development when Urie got extremely upset and started crying after Shirazu’s death. And then his declaration that he was determined to retrieve Shirazu’s body.
  •    Urie’s character has been undergoing physical changes with his sense of smell and taste changing.
  •    Eto’s been seemingly reminiscing flashback style on the battle Urie’s father died in, with references to Urie’s father each time.
  •    We’ve just seen our first image of Urie’s father.
  •    We’ve had a chapter heavily covering Urie’s attempts to connect with Matsuri and the upper world of the CCG.
  •    Every chapter of the new arc has had some kind of new information connected to Urie’s character.

It should be interesting to see where Ishida’s going with him.

  •    Will Urie be able to continue his plan climb to the top if his body breaks down and becomes more ghoul like? How will he handle it?
  •    Will Urie’s opinion of the Kuroiwa’s change any now that he’s failed to save a comrade?
  •    Will Urie be able to get Shirazu’s body, or has Kanou already done… stuff with it?
  •    Will we ever learn anything about Urie’s mother?

Here’s something to think about: Even normal humans in Tokyo Ghoul are not truly “normal humans” because RC cells that the humans in TG produce do not actually exist.

Neither does ROC syndrome or super strong “humans” like Amon. Tokyo Ghoul is like an AU of if biology were just a little different.

It would be interesting to see how RC cells affect people… Maybe they give strength, and Amon has a lot of natural RC cells for a human?

@snarky-gourmet Had written a theory a while ago about how RC cells could be used as steroids, which would be interesting.

I’ve thought that about Amon too. But then I get confused. If he had a higher than normal RC cells why if he truly is “Floppy” would he be a limited success (here read surviving at least) floppy?

All the successful half-ghouls and even more successful “floppies” like Nashiro and Kurona have had either had below healthy limits of low RC cell counts for humans like Kaneki, Nashiro and Kurona or at least borderline low RC counts like Takizawa?

Ok, I have an idea – what if human RC cell distribution is like a bell curve and those on the either side, which makes up the smallest percentages, have the most success?

That could explain why Amon could’ve been a partial success and not-dead.

Maybe, but it’s a hard theory to support without more base RC cell counts? Both Amon’s and then others.

Maybe if we knew what the Quinx started with that would help?

Definitely! As well as RC counts of other applicants for the project.

And yeah – most of my thoughts are speculation.

I think a lot of people are upset eto admits she is not the one eye King by justifying her. The one eye King I believe is a prophecy ? When tatara said during the anteiku the king shall pass maybe he was saying kaneki everyone was looking for him after hurting Amon so tatara was saying he’s going to go

floppyamon:

So I thought about this for a bit, and I came up with an idea

So according to the Chinese scanlation (thank you @lilydally) the writing for “pass” is just as flexible as it is in English (not sure for JPN atm)

To pass by somebody, to pass them something… to pass a test

Which leads me to believe that Amon may had been a candidate for being the OEK back in TG (he isn’t now however)

We at least know that Eto was very interested in Amon for a period of time:

“It’s worth watching people who push ahead at full speed finally fall”

And she even went so far as to place seeds of doubt in Amon’s mind when given the opportunity to do so (and she risked the RC Cell scanners going off as well, if they work that is)

So what if Eto had sent Tatara to go find Amon (because face it, it is a odd coincidence that Tatara decided to go into the dinky little alley that Amon was bleeding out in)

He then briefly explained what was happening:

“The king is going to pass… this test”

And after Tatara provoked Amon by grievously harming Seidou, Amon displayed the very traits that Eto has been trying to create in Kaneki in recent :re chapters: externalized anger, rage, a sense of justice:

The very traits needed to make the OEK, to which Tatar replies Hao (very good)

And during the three year timeskip, we can assume that Amon was built and molded to be King, but something happened. He failed miserably. A failure as a king, a flop, a floppy:

Which is why Eto has now reset her sights on the thought-to-be-dead, original one eyed ghoul, Kaneki

so tl;dr:

Amon was Eto’s candidate to be king and he passed the test that Tatara presented him with in the alleyway by displaying Eto-approved king traits, but sometime during the three-year time skip Amon wiggled his way out of being King which is why Eto hates him so much:

and why Amon is hobo-ing it out with Kurona now.

And as for speculation as to why Amon failed: if Amon did in fact make connections/relationships with ghouls during the time skip (Hinami, Shachi, Ayato) thus realizing ghouls aren’t the evil demons that the world makes them out to be, and Amon did agree with (a facet of) Eto’s philosophy that for ghouls to get rights, you need to bring down the CCG, her methods of doing so would have appalled him.

Killing investigators in the masses, violence and recklessness, Amon only fights for the ones he loves and to protect them, not for needless blood shed as Eto does. I wouldn’t be surprised if Amon just up and escaped the Tree after that and went to form his own little rag tag rebel group (Kurona, possibly others)

So the daily question remains: where the fuck is amon
