In 1686, the successful operation of the anal fissure of Louis XIV was celebrated by Lully with a song entitled “God Save the King.” Later, Handel popularized the song in England, where it quickly became the celebrated “God Save the Queen.” Commenting on this anecdote, the Marquise de Créquy wrote, “That the anthem of the English was born of an anus never ceases to make me laugh, but it does not surprise me for an instant.”
