Saying that man and woman are the only genders is actually LESS nuanced than saying that earth, water, air, and fire are the only elements.
This is fantastic.

this is ridiculous. i don’t know why the film and media studies department is the place to rethink current scientific knowledge about sex, but nevertheless–is op really going to pretend that the periodic table is a good analogy for biological sex? really?
the existence of intersex people does not disprove sexual dimorphism. people with chromosomal disorders like klinefelter syndrome and turner syndrome are not intersex, they are males (klinefelter) or females (turner). in fact, males with klinefelter can go their whole lives without knowing they have an extra x chromosome because they present the typical male phenotype and the symptoms are subtle. these disorders are rare mutations, not some kind of “third sex”, and they definitely do not indicate that sex is somehow a spectrum. it seems to me that op has a fundamental misunderstanding of what biological sex is and why it evolved.
also, “man” and “woman” are not genders. masculinity and femininity are genders, being sets of characteristics that males and females, respectively, are raised to embody in our society. gender isn’t some innate feeling of manhood or womanhood, it’s a social construct. the words “non-binary” and “genderqueer” are, from what i have seen, essentially meaningless–or, if anything, commentary on how well an individual conforms to the gender stereotypes of their sex. the fact that facebook offers those ways of identifying oneself to their customers doesn’t prove anything about the way gender works in our society. i’d recommend checking out delusions of gender by cordelia fine for a better, more accurate explanation of how it does.
