Every Chair Illustration in Tokyo Ghoul

tsukinopen:

that this poster is aware of ( related to Kaneki). Message me if there are any more!

The chair that represents how all that supports Kaneki slowly rots away over the course of TG and TG:re.  Kaneki has always been suicidal at heart. What happens when it is all gone?

This? Kidding! (Note: Source )

Vol 1 Cover (Zakki)

Kaneki sits in a majestic chair. His right hand holds what seems to be Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. His left hand is near his ghoul eye.

In the beginning, Kaneki was protected and supported by Anteiku and Hide.

TG Ch 2 (Lazy Ass Scans)

The chair has no arms. Is this early chapter inconsistency, or something deeper?

Books, representing dark knowledge, litter the ground. Perhaps it is Yggdrasil drawn on Kaneki’s thigh, which connects to the books on the ground through his legs.

Is Kakfa’s book switching hands?

TG Aogiri Arc (zakki)

The chair has begun rotting away. The paint and part of the chair back is gone. Rize and Yamori, Kaneki’s ghoul parents, stand behind him. Rize leans in, as if to whisper to him.  Yamori stands straight, with torture device in hand. It looks like there is some distance between Yamori and Kaneki. However, they are both dress all in black. “Yes, body by mother [Rize]. Soul by father [Yamori]. “ Kaneki sits like a king, but notice how heavily he leans on what remains of the chair.

Thanks @kanekikenunot(x) for pointing out that all these wooden chairs may be the same chair with part of it stripped away.

TG Ch 63 (zakki)

In another illustration from the Aogiri Arc, Kaneki’s left arm is broken. The book he was holding in the beginning is now of the ground. Was he holding on to the book with his left hand, before his injury forced him to let go?

Kaneki leaves Anteiku after the Aogori Arc. He refuses their support.

TG ch 120 ( Twisted Hel Scans)

Kaneki’s left arm was broken, and now the chair’s left arm is gone. The chair back has almost rotted away as well. Touka can only lean on the seat. The book lays on the ground in front of her.

This is the chapter Touka tells Kaneki to stay away from Anteiku, even though she doesn’t mean it. Thanks to Touka, Kaneki decides to disband his group, so he can return to Anteiku. Sadly, it is targeted at this point, and he does not get the chance.

TG:re ch 2 (imperial scans)

It is a parallel to TG ch 2. Kaneki sits on an office chair, instead of the wooden chair. Perhaps this represents how he with the CCG, memories repressed, supported solely by the CCG as far as he knows. The chair back is not visible. Maybe this represents how the CCG treats him as a disposable weapon, instead of supporting him unconditionally like Anteiku and Hide.

TG;re ch 53 (mangastream)

In a previous post (dying in style ), I talked about how Kaneki is dreaming again. In ch 53, in which chapter pun in redream, Kaneki dreams of a glorious chair from which he (Shiro and Haise) can jump off from and die in style. In addition, the thorns prevent him from leaning back, so the only way to go is down.  This is a contrast to the reality shown in other illustrations .

TG:re 72 (mangastream)

The chair seat has rotted away, so Touka fall through, leaning on what remains of the apron (googled this ). Kaneki leans on the right arm of the chair with his left arm. Notice how the part of his left arm that was broken on the TG ch 63 cover is hidden from view. His right arm is also hidden from view. Only his red right hand is visible.

TG Calendar 2016 December 31

(Translation: makyun and sei-un , Editing: ¼-Based Anon )

Here is Kaneki sitting in a chair-like structure. Notice how he’s thanking everyone for their support and asking them to continue to advise him. This a contrast to the current Kaneki, who refuses to rely on his nakama (because he feels undeserving ) and does not listen when they tell him not to thrown his life away. Accounting for this new mentality and how this page may correspond with a future chapter at the end of the year, it might occur after the wooden chair rots away. The new chair may represent how he accepts their support.

Okay that’s it. There’s stuff about the right(good) and left(dark) hand of God and how that relates to all of this that I haven’t thought out fully, so it’s been left out.

Just notice how the left side of the chair crumbles as Kaneki goes off doing his solo suicidal tragic hero missions.
