Yeah, I’ve been thinking about this a lot because if :RE is going to be shorter than TG, then it does feel like something of a wrap-up. And if it IS a wrap up, then I feel like the whole series was too short, too rushed….
But. Consider a few things. We don’t have any idea how long :RE will be, nor do we know if TG will end up being a trilogy. Only Ishida knows the sketch of the plot, so it’s hard for me to make judgements. Because I don’t know.
The other thing is this, though. Tokyo Ghoul was a tragedy…one young man’s tragedy, and though many others were instrumental and/or involved in his tragedy, that was the primary thrust of the story. I would submit the idea that :RE is a war story, and the pace of the plot reflects that. In a war, you go from battle to battle, and the battles are everything. We get minimal “dead time,” minimal exposition, it’s very lean storytelling in a way that Tokyo Ghoul never was. Ishida is relying on the massive amounts of exposition he did in Tokyo Ghoul to fill in the gaps in :RE, where the focus is on battles and unlocking the cage.
From a writer’s perspective, it seems to me that his editors have asked him to trim the fat from the story, to keep it heavy-hitting and fast paced. This is pure speculation, but it’s one of the most common things that editors ask editors….cut back. I don’t know if that’s going on here, but it could be, and if so, it makes sense that Ishida would trim the story down to explosive battles and heavy-hitting details.
If that IS the case, though, then he’s doing an amazing job..think of how much detail he packs into every chapter?? It’s amazing. He’s an incredible writer.
And that’s why, even though I share your same anxieties, I am reserving any judgment until the series ends. Because there could be so many more chapters, so many more twists and turns, and I don’t want to judge the series based on the assumption of it’s ending soon.
Of course, you’re entitled to your opinions, but I would say, if it’s really getting to you, take a break and abstain from reading the weekly chapters for a bit. Or….just wait and see. 🙂
