Shiranui is a Japanese term which literally means ‘unknown fire’.
This term is given to the optical or supernatural phenomenon similar to will-o’-the-wisp. It is also the name of a sea (also called Yatsushiro Sea) which separates the island of Kyushu from the Amakusa Islands.
A small bonus trivia: Shirazu’s name when written in Japanese comes from a part of ‘Shiranui’.
