Suzuya Juuzou – Joker
Been thinking about Suzuya recently, and how he’s also on a joker card. I wonder if that’ll come back into play, and how it might. The first set jokers were Suzuya, Arima, and T-Owl. The multiple allegiances and roles of Takizawa as T-Owl were already clear, and Arima as a V agent has since come to light.
The second set has poor Karren, who sort of had a duel role, very briefly, but was a visual parallel to T-Owl and could have shared his fate if she hadn’t chosen the path she did at the end. Furuta and Kaneki should be pretty obvious.
Which leaves us with Suzuya. Currently, he’s set up as the next Arima Kishou as far as talent goes, which gets more and more interesting the more suspicious and messy Arima’s true nature and origins become. But he’s on par with Arima in terms of age of reaching special class, even if he started in the CCG much later. Both of them have a past as children raised to kill, but in very different settings, with very different sorts of conditioning.
He has a very interesting perspective on the job of being a ghoul investigator, too. He’s said repeatedly that he views it as a job, rather than a moral responsibility, and we’ve seen that play out on both sides of the coin – against Shiro and Kuro, where carrying out his job was “morally wrong” but personally complicated and against Big Madam, where it was “morally right” but personally complicated. The only other person to vocally acknowledge being an investigator as “just a job” was Yoshitoki, saying it to Yoshimura, and pretty clearly talking about the endless game of back and forth they play as puppets of V.
So it’s interesting that Suzuya’s outlook should weirdly mirror that.
He also has an interesting perspective because he’s seen the most brutal the ghoul world has to offer, viscerally and first hand. No one can say that Suzuya Juuzou doesn’t know how evil and sadistic ghouls can be. He knows better than anyone. So if he is to get a glimpse into the depths of the dark heart of the CCG and come away with the conclusion that humans and ghouls are no different, he is almost uniquely in a position to be unchallenged in that claim.
But as far as we know, Suzuya is also free of V’s influence and connections to them, which puts him in an interesting place as the top investigator, especially if shit really hits the fan in terms of V and the Washuu connection there.
He is a proven leader and strategy builder. Despite his unorthodox appearance and eccentric, even childlike personality, he commands a lot of respect. He’s raked in achievement after achievement. His squad is choreographed and disciplined.
Which all makes me wonder, now that unrest is starting to simmer –
Ahhh I literally gasped when I saw this, and I felt some kind of way when I saw it was dedicated to me ;-; <3.
Anyway, I’m very curious about that last little bit (yes, I read it, twice!) about the remote possibility of Juuzou being somehow from the Garden. Wouldn’t that be a thing to behold? It would made some kind of sense, though, and though I actually never considered it, it’s one of those things that I could see being true.
It could also not be true. I don’t think any of us are trusting our guesses any more (and I’ve never been one for speculation anyway). But I would have to say….Juuzou is the type that holds all of his information close to the chest. He doesn’t reveal anything….anything…unless it’s necessary. It’s one of the many interesting and unique aspects of his character. So I am very sure that the presence of a mole in the organization is a piece of information that he’s not bothered to broadcast, but that he also hasn’t forgotten. And I would bet money that he’s not let his team forget it either.
Also, Juuzou’s evolution and maturation as a character has already played into the plot in a few ways, but I’m very interested to see what else comes of it. I can’t really imagine that he’s done being a major player at this point. He’s in this arc, and I feel as though big, important things are going to happen either because of him or around him.
But yes, Juuzou seems to have very little moral feeling about ghouls. He doesn’t seem to think that they are particularly bad. Judging by what he says to Kurona and Nashiro, and later Big Madame, it seems that he feels that ghouls and humans are about the same, but that his job is to eliminate ghouls. Perhaps Juuzou, like Kaneki, will serve as a “bridge” to this new world…
Of course, I’m afraid to assume that positive results will come from his participation in this raid. I’m very concerned that Juuzou’s unbelievable luck will run out before the end of this manga, and that terrifies me. But lets just assume…..let’s just assume that he and Kaneki will both serve as “bridge” characters between these two worlds…..
No, thank you for the continuous top quality Juuzou content.
I think at this point, I’ve seen speculation that almost every character might secretly come from the Garden, including those we know canonically did not come from the Garden, and you know what? I don’t trust Ishida not to put me through this kind of pain again, so I can’t let myself deny the possibility. Everyone’s from the Garden and everyone’s a Washuu and everyone’s a half-ghoul and everyone’s the One-Eyed King. I’m not bitter, I’m just paranoid.
I want to say that he’s had enough bad luck for a lifetime, already, but this is Ishida we’re talking about, and the Tokyo Ghoul Universe, so really, there doesn’t seem to be a cap on that. But I would be really quite shocked if Suzuya doesn’t still turn out to have a big role to play. I am, unfortunately, less sure of the plot-security of his lovely squad. I hope, but hope means nothing to the cruel pen of Ishida Sui.
In my head, I bargain with Ishida like one might with a cruel god – Take Ui instead! Leave the Suzuya Squad and take Ui instead! “Foolish mortal” the Great Ishida bellows “Ui never had a chance.”Now that Amon is also on the “ghoul” side of things, at least half way, I’d love to see signs that Suzuya was taking up that role as bridge between the worlds as well as potentially taking up the investigation of the CCG from the inside.
(The only other person I can really see taking up that mantle is Mado, but, it would be very, very personal with her. But then, that mantle is heavy enough to share. Plus, they had a fun dynamic in Tokyo Ghoul and I’d love to see what it looks like now after so much has changed.)
