my-dear-lost-one:

Hide: Are you trying to kill yourself by drowning like that dude… that… famous dude!

Translation by @tokyo-fushu

I’m pretty sure who Hide means is the famous author Dazai Osamu, who drowned himself in 1948 together with his lover. It was his third suicide attempt. One of his previous attemempts had been similar: He tried to drown himself together with a lover, but she died while he survived.

Dazai Osamu is actually one of Kaneki’s favorite authors. He quotes him in chapter one: “The people I want to believe in were born for love and revolution.” And, as Eto points out in chapter 109, the name Kaneki has the same kanji as Kanagi, Osamu Dazai’s hometown.

Hide: Hey, Kaneki, you’ve been reading those martial arts magazines, right?
Kaneki: Yeah…
Hide: DUDE!! Teach me something!!
Kaneki: Um…
Hide: Come on, man!
Kaneki: (Actually, I’ve read that trying to teach a subject is a great way to learn it…)
Kaneki: Yeah, okay…
Hide: YESSS!!
